Our local free newspaper has a food critic section which I must say is excellent. Reading our local paper, I feel nostalgia in my heart as I recall how my high school newspaper once reviewed Kenny Roger's Roasters. This newspaper too has decided it is not too low to review the common and ordinary. I'm not sure if Sonic (yes, the fastfood chain) is a novelty in your area, but it must be in ours. Or it may not be novelty, but a sense here that dinner at Sonic equates to a glamorous night on the town.
I applaud the editors for a rating system that doesn't challenge the mental tenacity of the reader. In another column, which commonly likes to review things that one might find in the freezer section of your grocery store, one author has devised the smiley face rating system. No longer must we worry that the reader may confuse whether "thumbs up" means good or bad or whether three stars is better than four. A smiley face means that the author (undoubtedly trying to get the article in before a forgotten deadline) likes the 18-month old burrito that he found stuck in the frost in the back of his freezer. A squiggly smiley face with a tongue sticking out could mean that I liked it but it made me a little woozy. What makes it fun is the system is up to your own interpretation.
